As a mental health professional and a person of faith, I deeply understand the value of rest—not just as a means to recharge the body and mind but as a sacred practice that nurtures the soul. This year, I’m taking two weeks off work to focus on my own rest and renewal, trusting in God’s design for sabbath and restoration.
In a world that often glorifies busyness, it can feel countercultural to step away from work and responsibilities. Yet, Scripture reminds us time and again of the importance of rest, both for our well-being and for our relationship with God. Let’s explore why rest matters, how it aligns with a Christian worldview, and how it can transform your mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Rest as a Divine Design
From the very beginning, God modeled the importance of rest. In Genesis 2:2-3, after six days of creation, God rested on the seventh day and made it holy. This wasn’t because God needed rest but to set an example for us. He designed us to work hard and then step back, trusting Him to sustain us.
Why Rest Matters to God
It Honors the Sabbath In Exodus 20:8-10, we’re commanded to “remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.” Taking time to rest is an act of obedience, acknowledging that we are not the source of our strength—God is.
It Renews Our Spirit Psalm 23:1-3 beautifully describes how God restores our soul, leading us beside still waters and refreshing our spirit. Rest allows us to experience His peace and presence more fully.
It Strengthens Our Trust in Him When we rest, we surrender our need for control and trust that God will provide for us. Matthew 11:28 reminds us of Jesus’ invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Why I’m Taking Time Off
As a therapist, I’ve seen the profound impact of rest on mental health—and I practice what I preach. This year, I’m taking two weeks off to focus on my own well-being, reconnect with loved ones, and spend time in prayer and reflection.
This time off is not just a break from work; it’s a chance to renew my faith and remind myself that my worth is not tied to productivity but to being a beloved child of God. I encourage you to view rest as a sacred act in your own life—a way to honor God’s design.
The Spiritual, Mental, and Physical Importance of Rest for your Mental Health
1. Rest for the Soul
Rest creates space for spiritual renewal. In the quiet moments, we can hear God’s voice more clearly, reflect on His promises, and deepen our relationship with Him.
2. Rest for the Mind
When we’re constantly busy, our minds can become overwhelmed with worry and stress. Rest helps us find clarity and peace, aligning our thoughts with Philippians 4:8: “Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable—think about such things.” This shows the importance of rest for your mental health.
3. Rest for the Body
Our physical health is a gift from God, and rest allows us to steward it well. By prioritizing sleep, proper nutrition, and relaxation, we honor the Creator.
Practical Ways to Embrace Rest
1. Schedule Sacred Time
Set aside time each week for rest and reflection. Use this time to pray, read Scripture, or simply enjoy God’s creation.
2. Let Go of Guilt
Rest is not selfish; it’s biblical. Remember that even Jesus stepped away from the crowds to pray and rest (Luke 5:16) even though He didn't "need" it - He is God. (He actually did this more often as He became more known.)
3. Seek Support When Needed
If you’re struggling with burnout, stress, or spiritual disconnect, consider reaching out for help. Therapy, particularly intensive therapy sessions, can provide tools to restore balance.
For Caregivers: Trusting God with Rest
Caregivers often feel the weight of endless responsibilities, but God calls us to cast our burdens on Him (1 Peter 5:7). Taking time to rest doesn’t mean you’re neglecting your loved ones—it means you’re trusting God to sustain you and them. Timely rest is temporary, not permanent time off.

A Call to Rest
As I prepare for my own time of rest, I encourage you to reflect on your own needs. How can you create space to reconnect with God, nurture your faith, and restore your mind and body?
Rest is an act of faith—it’s trusting that God will take care of what you leave undone. It’s believing that you’re worthy of renewal because you are His beloved.
