Why I'm Pursuing Nursing Home Administration: Expanding My Mission to Serve Older Adults

If you've followed my journey over the years, you know my heart has always been about helping people navigate life's hardest seasons. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I've had the privilege of walking alongside individuals, couples, families, caregivers, and older adults through grief, mental health challenges, dementia, chronic illness, and some of life's most difficult decisions. Those experiences have shaped who I am—not only as a clinician, but as a person.

Recently, I took an exciting next step in that journey.

I was accepted into the Arkansas Health Care Association's Administrator-in-Training (AIT) Program, where I'll be preparing for licensure as an Arkansas Nursing Home Administrator.

For some, that announcement may have come as a surprise. For me, it feels like the next natural step.

Counseling Opened My Eyes

Throughout my counseling career, I discovered something that kept showing up again and again. Families weren't just struggling emotionally. They were overwhelmed by the healthcare system. Adult children were trying to care for aging parents while raising children of their own. Spouses were becoming caregivers overnight. Families were making decisions about memory care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, hospice, finances, and quality of life—often without a roadmap. I realized that many of the challenges people brought into my office extended far beyond what could be addressed during a counseling session. What if I could help improve the systems they were navigating?

A Bigger Picture

My passion has never been limited to therapy. I've always been drawn to education, leadership, developing programs, solving problems, and helping organizations create better experiences for the people they serve. As I worked more closely with older adults and their families, I found myself asking bigger questions.

How can long-term care communities better support residents emotionally as well as medically?

How do we create workplaces where healthcare professionals feel valued and equipped to provide excellent care?

How can families feel like true partners in the care of their loved ones?

How do we honor dignity, purpose, and quality of life throughout the aging journey?

Those questions ultimately led me to nursing home administration.

Why Mental Health Still Matters

Some people have asked if this means I'm leaving mental health behind.

The answer is no. In fact, I believe my counseling background is one of the greatest strengths I bring into healthcare leadership. Long-term care is about far more than regulations, budgets, and operations.

It's about people.

It's about understanding dementia beyond the diagnosis.

It's about recognizing caregiver grief before a loved one passes away.

It's about supporting staff who carry enormous emotional responsibility every day.

It's about helping families navigate guilt, fear, conflict, hope, and uncertainty.

Mental health belongs in every conversation about aging.

Looking Ahead

As I complete the Administrator-in-Training program, I'll be learning every aspect of nursing home administration—from healthcare operations and regulatory compliance to quality improvement and organizational leadership. I'm excited to learn from experienced leaders while continuing to grow professionally.

Most of all, I'm excited about the opportunity to combine two worlds that are often viewed separately: mental health and long-term care leadership. I believe the future of senior care depends on leaders who understand both.
